National Park Service Network to Freedom

Murphy Orchards Part of National Park Service National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom

The National Park Service, on April 4, 2001, selected Murphy Orchards to be a charter member of the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Murphy Orchards was among only 37 candidates in the entire United States to be considered in this first round of solicited applications. Murphy Orchards was the only candidate from the State of New York.

The Underground Railroad Network to Freedom encompasses a diverse collection of elements comprised of historic sites and properties, plus facilities and programs that have a verifiable association to the Underground Railroad, with the goals of preserving and protecting elements of the Underground Railroad throughout the United States, and of commemorating and educating the public about the history of the Underground Railroad.

Murphy Orchards' selection was based upon the value of existing educational programs offered to the public, which "exceed the minimum level of professionalism, accuracy, operation and accessibility" demanded by the National Park Service. Paramount to us is the National Park Service's recognition that our educational programs make a significant contribution to the understanding of the Underground Railroad in American history.
