Murphy Orchards is a 65-acre, family owned and operated fruit farm, located about 12 miles due north of Lockport, New York, 2 miles south of the Lake Ontario shore, and 17 miles east of Niagara Falls, in Burt, right next to Newfane.

We welcome everyone, without reservation or admission charge, to come and pick fruit, browse through our Country Store, have Afternoon Tea or Luncheon in our Tea Room (RESERVATIONS are suggested - Tuesday- Sunday 11am- 4pm), enjoy our grounds and facilities, and visit our barn where you can see the entrance to a secret room where people escaping from slavery between 1850 and 1861 were sheltered by the McClew family before going on to the safety of their next stop.

We also offer an Underground Railroad Heritage guided tour by reservation. Our tours are designed for larger school and special groups. For more information on group tours see our School & Group Tours page. For more information on visits see our Motorcoach Visits page.

We make a large variety of homemade jams and jellies, right here on the farm, which you can purchase in our Country Barn Store, order online, or order by mail using our printable order form.

We are very proud of the heritage of this farm that is our new home. The farm has been a family owned and operated fruit farm in continuous production since the early 1800s.

We still grow plants on the same soil to earn our living, and still use the farmhouse, barn and outbuildings built by Charles and Libby McClew in 1850.

Charles and Libby McClew are believed to have been part of the Underground Railroad Network between 1850 and 1861.

The farm's structures, the orchards and the landscape itself remain virtually as they were 150 years ago, allowing you to step back in time and experience a very special and unique view of Underground Railroad History.

There is a concealed chamber beneath the barn (the trap door entrance to this chamber can be viewed from inside the barn) where people escaping from slavery organized secret routes throughout the United States. Here they were able to hide and were cared for by the McClew family until it was safe for them to continue on their journey to freedom in Canada.

You can view the entrance to the secret room on a guided tour.
